Applause Of A Distant Crowd - VOLA

New songs – new contrasts

It is in particular the melodies, which saves AoaDC from at times to be tedious. While the disc lacks the contrasts between the harsh and the melodic, then AoaDC's greatest strength-the contrast between the grim and the melodic uplifting. Vola has taken a development, I necessarily after two weeks of heavy rotation of the new gambit is not yet 100 % on board with. But even though I miss the heavy riffs and I think there are too many quiet passages, so it is still, at the core, Vola. The nerve that made Inmazes so good – the contrasts – are intact. It is just in a new way.

The anticipation of pleasure and pressure

En Vola in 2015 released Inmazes, took their so-called Mewshuggah-style me by storm. Are you unfamiliar with the Volas debut, so it was an easy freaky djenty Mew, the fun style was baptized in the subsoil. Vola has created a unique symbiosis between the hard riffs and the often grandiose and quirky melodies delivered with a very soft and popped the vocals, which meant a style that flourished in the contrasts, while their talent for understated addictive song-writing meant that songs confidently crept under the skin of the listener.

Inmazes had imperfections, and some more than others, but it showed so much potential, that I in my head had built up a perhaps unrealistic expectation of a triumphant masterpiece for the ages with the Applause of a Distant Crowd (AoaDC forward). Unfair expectations maybe, but it gives an understanding of my stance within the hard dry.

Soft packs can also be good

It is evident from the åbningsnummeret that the band wants to develop his sound, and not be stagnant in a musical recipe, and instead focus on the elements that make the band special in the oversaturated djent-market. But they forget in the same place, to the quirky Mew-inspired parts on Inmazes was primarily exciting in a raw context of djenty riffs, which on AoaDC have been subjected to cuts. Vola is still Vola, and the progressive style with the infectious and high-sounding melodies is intact. We need to go to the disc's third track, "Smartfriend", before we are spoilt for choice with the heavy riffs. And with the exception of "the Whaler" and the title track is the contrast between the soft and the hard, as T does as well, very sporadic.

It is not necessarily only negative, that the band has become softer, as the high-flying and very electronica-inspired track "Ghosts" surprisingly enough, is a candidate for the album's strongest cut, with the presence of Volas aforementioned ear for a strong melody without ever losing weightiness, due to a more dystopian sound. AoaDC is also to a greater extent than in the past characterised by a more electronic sound, which takes a little upper hand at the middle intersections, and here particularly the "Alien Shivers". Dystopien and the dark electronica however, is always offset by Volas ability to write strong melodies and choruses with a high ceiling.
